Menemsha Beach and Harbor at sunset is one of the many beautiful and free sites to see on Martha’s Vineyard. There is a great, clean, public beach with restrooms that is perfect for sunbathing and swimming during the day, and there are lots of great restaurants (I recommend Home Port) where you can watch the sun as it sets. You can walk out on the piers and the docks and see all the beautiful boats that are mooring and docking in the area.
While you’re there make sure to seek out the Swordfish Harpoon Statue. The statue looks back on a time when more people speared swordfish with harpoons. Now the common practice is long lining which can catch fish before they mature, or accidently catch sea turtles or dolphins. The statue has been in Menemsha, one of a few created by the artist Jay Lagemann, since 1994. Once you’ve seen the sites you can catch the bus back to where you are staying. We used the bus system on Martha’s Vineyard all the time when we visited and found it very useful.
Tips
- Sunblock it up.
