Up on the roof of the guest house on a clear night you can hear the chirps of crickets and the bleating of goats beneath a sky almost overflowing with stars. The solar-powered lamp just south of the house, dimly illuminates the gateway to the boy’s village where 400 kids sleep with no electricity in … Continue reading

Unique New York: 5 Quirky Things To Do in Manhattan
Each time I visit New York City, I feel like I get further and further from the traditional tourist obsessions. That’s not to say I don’t still enjoy them: we had to take a peak at the naked cowboy in Time Square and we couldn’t pass up just a few Broadway shows while we were … Continue reading
A Catholic and a Protestant Walk into a Bar
We walked down the dimly lit street in East Village as the glowing hot dog came into view above our heads. Down the steps into Crif Dogs we nonchalantly sought the mysterious phone booth. The wood stained box called almost no attention to itself. Tucked behind one edge of the wall, like all things worth … Continue reading
Around the World This Week: A Quick Visit Off-Broadway
If you follow The Penniless Traveler on facebook, you already know that I traveled “Around the World in NYC” on Friday night. Accompanied by Jules Verne’s eccentric cast of characters in a small, Off-Broadway Theater on 45th street, I traveled from England to India to San Francisco and back again. New York City in and … Continue reading
A Mushroom House in the Woods: A New York Fairytale
The final stop on our fabulous road trip was “The Mushroom House.” Where I said “stopped” I probably should have said that my Dad and I “trespassed.” This is private property, as in some-lucky-shmuck lives here. A little tricky to find, this house is up a narrow dirt road off the side of a park. … Continue reading
Victorian Houses aren’t usually built on factories?
One of the quickest stops (and posts) on our road trip, we HAD to stop at the Victorian House on top of a factory, if only because it was so close to the mind-numbingly mind-blowing “Green on Top” traffic light. I couldn’t find out too much of the history for this stop (which … Continue reading
Is that even legal?: America’s Only Upside Down Traffic Light
This was BY FAR the most exciting of the stops my dad and I made on our fabulous two day road trip from Boston to central Ohio. And that means a lot when you take a look at all the odd, quirky, beautiful, unique things we saw. I read about this stop on Roadside America. … Continue reading
Hemingway drops the F-Bomb
You’ve probably heard of the incredibly wealthy J.P. Morgan before, but perhaps you haven’t heard of Pierpont Morgan (his son, and possessor of my favorite snooty and cliched rich-guy name). While good ol’ dad was the one who began the tradition of collecting rare books and pieces of art, Morgan Jr. was the one who opened up Morgan’s library and galleries to the public in the 1920s, and, boy, am I glad he did. Continue reading
